I’m guessing that if you are reading this article you are a do it yourself guitarists like me.
The guitar is an odd instrument because the majority of people that learn it do it by themselves with minimum help from books and courses.
There is nothing wrong with this way of learning guitar but it does have some disadvantages.
One of the main problems is that when you teach yourself there is no one to force you to learn musical notation.
Most of us are too busy with the serious business of actually playing.
The fact that most guitarists do not read music means they need another system of notation that takes very little time and effort to understand. this system is called TAB.
Learning guitar tab will tell you:
- The guitar techniques you need to use like hammer-ons, pull-offs and bends
- Guitar notes that you need to play
- what guitar tuning the song is in
- The strings that you need to play the notes on
- whether you need to use a capo or not
This all sound great but there are problems with guitar tab. The biggest single problem is there is no way to tell how long each of the notes should be played for or the speed and beat of a song. There have been attempts to include this info in tab but they are never very effective and there is no standard method. What this means is learning a song you don’t know using guitar tab will be difficult.
There are lots of advantages to learning guitar tab though.
Guitar is hugely popular so the tab for nearly every song can be readily found. It can be written in text only format so it’s great for the internet and you can learn it very quickly. Have a look at the video below to get the basics.
